Budtenders

When I started following @budtenderawards on Instagram back in the earlier months of 2019 I didn’t realize how big the movement was about to be nor did I foresee my future role in it all. I liked the idea of it, but I wasn’t sold on it actually turning into such a monumental event. After all, it was the first of its kind and I found it a bit unbelievable that a group came together just to honor budtenders on such a grand scale. Although I had my apprehensions I continued to follow the page, interact with the posts, and supported the cause.

I am beyond thrilled with myself for sticking with it because I was one of the first nine budtenders to be bestowed with the honor of winning at the first awards ceremony in 2019. It has brought me a sense of pride that is unexplainable.

I come from one of the last generations to have viewed cannabis as taboo. I have lost so many friends and family members to the legal system due to the ridiculous laws our country has had on cannabis for decades. I feel as though I did not win this award for myself, but for all those who have come before me and pathed the way for such a ceremony to be held in OUR honor. Hearing HighTimes announce my name as one of the finalists was probably one of my favorite parts of the entire experience, because I felt like whether I won or lost I still made it to the top of the voting process. Which was far from easy. Getting people to vote for me once was easy, but to get people to continue to vote was no walk in the park. It turned into a part-time job. Lol!

The event itself was more than I could have imagined. I wish my shop would let me have the entire time off to enjoy all of the event days and activities, however, I am grateful for the experiences I did get to enjoy. The expo was DOPE! The vendors showed us so much love and the educational seminars were informative and interesting. The awards ceremony was unbelievable. I felt so special and celebrated! Seeing my name on the big screen had me feeling like a celebrity up for their first Grammy! Once I heard Modest Jones call my name I was in shock! I couldn’t believe it! I was so excited I almost tripped running up to the stage! I could barely get out my thanks and appreciation. To say the least, I was breathless.

Unfortunately, I didn’t get to experience the meet & greet with Cypress Hill, however, I did meet Dan Herer. Being able to talk to him, bounce ideas off of one another, and pay respects to his father was truly an honor.

Since winning my career has taken me places I never thought I would go! I have been featured in a cannabis magazine, MG Retailer. Numerous cannabis companies have reached out to me for my expert opinion. I landed a better-paying job in the industry shortly after. So many people look up to me as a mentor in the industry. I feel so blessed truly. Winning the award has given me the ability to truly believe that the sky’s the limit! I am capable of anything and everything I set my mind to.

I can’t wait to see where the future awards ceremonies take us! I would love to see BTA honor someone like Snoop or maybe even Dr. Dre! I wish 2pac and Biggie were still alive to see how far we have truly come. The future of cannabis is so bright. I pray one day all those who have been incarcerated for low-level cannabis crimes are released so they too can witness and partake in all the greatness this magical plant has to offer the world! We are currently experiencing the green rush! It can only get better from here on out!

Thank you BTA team for giving me something I never imagined possible. I will forever cherish my award and memories.

Every Nomination Counts as a vote!
